Introduction

Using DAP or DAC as an external sound card to enhance the performance of your computer facility is one of the common practice among CAS users, the process is fairly straight forward if you are using Linux or OS X based computer systems because these devices support USB Audio Class 2.0 natively.  Unfortunately, a majority of Window-based system will require a device driver to fully explore the potential of Hi-Res audio.  Depends on the system they are using, the driver installation process can be more tedious than expected, especially after Microsoft implemented the Driver Signature Enforcement practice.

As user experience becomes an indispensable part of a modern sound system, Cayin has taken the need of our customers seriously and developed a proprietary USB Driver for all Cayin USB-based products.

A new experience at your fingertips

The advantages of Cayin Universal USB Audio Driver are:

1.    The device driver can install like any regular application, there is no need to connect the audio equipment to the computer facility in advance (with exception of Windows XP system).

2.    Once installed, Cayin USB-based products that supported by the same USB Audio Driver will become a plug-and-play device with your Window based facility, there is no need to switch to another driver when you change your Cayin equipment.

3.    The driver is designed to explore full potential of your Cayin USB-based audio equipment.

1.    The N8, N6ii, N5ii, N5iiS, CS-100DAC or DAC-19, 280A, these products support Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 operating system, while they do not support Windows XP or Vista.  They are recommended to use with USB Audio Driver v4.35 or v4.47.

2.    The N3, i5, N6, and iDAC-6 supports Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, they can work with USB Audio Driver v2.29 or v4.47. You may choose the one that fits your system the most.

3.    The DAC-11, CS-55A and our 6 CD Players don’t support Windows 10, so they can only work with USB Audio Driver v2.29 or v3.30.

4.    As Windows changed their USB Audio support several times during the Windows 10 era, we have to issue different version of v4.xx USB Audio Driver to resolve the incompatibility with latest Windows 10 installations.

5.    If you are using a previous version of Cayin USB Driver such as v4.35 and is working fine so far, then there is no urgent need to upgrade your Audio Driver to v4.47. New products such as iDAC6-MK2 or N6ii are recommended to use v4.47 to ensure compatibility.

6.    If your Cayin USB products can only support V3.30 USB Audio Driver, it might not be able to work with the latest Windows 10 computers correctly,

Asynchronized USB transmission

To ensure we have best possible USB Audio performance, Cayin USB-based products operate in Asynchronized USB transmission mod.  This will involve

·           The DAC’s master clock will not be synchronized directly to the clock of the digital source (a computer in most of the cases)

·           The DAC clock controls the data stream from the computer to a buffer near the DA converter

It is called asynchronous because the DAC’s master clock isn’t synchronized directly to the clock within the computer.  In another word, the audio signal processing is deliberately "disconnected" from the computer clock to minimize the interference and jitter due to audio transmission. These advantages established the foundation of high-quality USB Audio playback.

USB Audio Driver Installation

1.         Please be reminded that there are THREE current versions of Cayin Universal USB Audio Driver, please select the appropriate version according to the following list:

·      Windows 7 and above (V4.47.0)

·      Windows 7 and above (V3.30.0):

·      Windows XP and Vista (V2.29.0)

Due to the unique system requirement of Windows XP, you must connect your Cayin USB based audio equipment to your computer when you install the Cayin Universal USB Audio Driver, otherwise, the system will fail to complete the installation.  Computers running Windows 7 and above does not require a USB connection during installation.

2.    If you have installed V3.30 USB Audio Driver previously and wanted to upgrade to V4.XX, please uninstall the previous USB Audio Driver first and then install V4.XX driver to avoid system errors.

3.    Most Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 systems can install the v4.xx Audio Driver directly. However, if you are using Windows 10 v1607 and encountered installation failure, you’ll need to modify the setting of Driver Signature Enforcement which is located at the Advanced option of Trouble Shooting Screen.  You can access to Trouble Shooting screen with the following procedure:

Installation Procedures

The following procedures illustrate the installation of a v4.47 USB Audio Driver on a Windows 10 system installation. The process should be largely the same with other USB Audio Driver on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

1.    Extract the installation package after download and you’ll receive an .exe file.  Double click to start the installation process.

2.    Select “Next” at the Installation Welcome Screen of the System Setup function.

10.png

3.    Confirm the Driver installation Location, unless you have customized your system setup specifically, we recommend you to accept the default installation location and select “Install” to proceed.

11.png

12.png

4.   The system will extract all the necessary files to the specified location, this might take a while, please wait patiently.

13.png

5.   After all driver components have been extracted, Window Security will prompt you again before the actual installation, tick the “Always trust software from” box and select “Install” to proceed.

14.png

6.   Windows will install the Cayin Universal Audio Driver from here on, and inform you when the process is completed.  You will be reminded to reconnect your USB device at the end of the installation.

15.png

16.png

7.    After the installation is completed, you should notice a blue Cayin icon will be displayed at the Notification Area, now you can connect any Cayin USB-based audio equipment to your computer.  We shall use Cayin N5ii DAP to illustrate the subsequent procedure, but the process should be fairly similar to other equipment.

17.png

8.   Set the USB mode of your DAP to DAC and connect your N5ii to your computer with an appropriate USB cable, N3ii screen will detect and display an USB connection screen.

9.   Double click the icon and you’ll open up the Cayin Control Panel.  You can monitor the operation status of your Cayin equipment here.

18.png

10.    A larger buffer setting will improve the transmission stability, but it will inevitably cause delays in the audio signal with reference to the original non-buffered signal (e.g, video signal of computer).  Reduce the buffer size will improve audio visual synchronization but compromised the audio performance.

11.    You need to specify the system output device before you can use the Cayin USB-based audio equipment properly.  Go to Hardware and Sound page of Control Panel, select the Sound option, and set the Cayin device as the default output in the Playback tag.

19.png

12.    Now everything is set and ready, you could open any music streaming Apps (plug and play, no need any other settings) like Foobar2000 in your computer and put on your headphone to enjoy your CAS system.
